So you wanna start a link exchange.
You can automate a lot of the drudgery involved with exchanging links with link management scripts that will take the link submissions, place them in your directory automatically or hold them for administrative review. There are several programs both free and for purchase that will automate most of this task. A good free link management program is at http://www.onlinemarketingtoday.com. It is not the only product available so feel free to look around for one that suits your needs
The first thing you will find after startup is how few people even read the requirement for linking or even take the time and effort to submit to the proper section in your link directory. Through experience you will find at least 95% of all entries will be to the wrong category. What this reveals is at the least a laziness on the user end to read and comply to your requirements.
It is totally amazing to see how many people that will want links from you and don't even read the requirements page (if you have one). And to top it off they show no incentive when it comes to actually looking at your link directory to find the proper, relevant category. Ok so maybe you don't have a category that will fit them exactly so they should move on to find another site that will fit them, but if they do submit anyway they should at least try to get close, right?
Have you ever done this kind of ninja submit when you request a link? Shame on you. Your efforts are wasted, time is money don't waste your time or your potential link partners on dumb stuff! No way, no how are you going to get link partner relationship without following the rules of the house.
Ok all that said there are still more wanna be link partners that don't put a return link on the link page. Again this must come from not reading the requirements page because it clearly states to put a link on their page first then submit. Another trick they will pull is to put your link on a "link partner" page that has no direct link to it from the main page. Just an FYI, a link partner page that has no direct link to it from the home page is a worthless page.
Why bury your link partner directory where no search engine can spider it or where no human eye will ever see it? This kind of link partner is not worthy your consideration and only has selfish motives. You will not a mutual benefit from this relationship in any way.
So starting a link directory is work! It can take hours out of your day or week. You have to monitor the incoming links, put them into a relevant category, add a relevant category if it's a useful topic related to the content and theme you want for your site. Overall it is a thankless job but one that will, over time, establish your link directory as an authority in it's niche.
One other benefit to this is that you get to see the kind of niches and keywords people are targeting. Insightful, revealing and possibly profitable if you follow a trend that has potential.
Link well and prosper!
